William Francis Moore

Artist Profile

Born in 1934 in Christchurch, New Zealand, William's (Bill's) artistic talent and drive was evident from an early age. Bill received encouragement to further develop his painting while attending Christchurch Teachers' College. Jamie Masterton the college art tutor instructed Bill to buy professional art supplies and get serious about his painting. He studied art part-time at Canterbury University and also attended the St Martins School of Art in London.

A working member of the Canterbury Society of Arts since 1956, Bill taught art for 30 years. He left teaching in 1987 to devote himself fully to his painting; a decision he has never regretted. Bill has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions both in New Zealand and around the world and he has won a number of awards.

Bill knows New Zealand intimately, having traveled extensively all over the country. He has a particular passion for the high country around New Zealand's Southern Alps and the big skies and dry grasslands of the Canterbury hinterland. Since 1988 Bill has also traveled widely abroad gaining inspiration and painting in Greece, France, Italy, The United Kingdom, Scandinavia, USA and Mexico.

Bill paints in watercolour, oil and acrylic in an impressionistic style. His work is characterized by broad, brushstrokes, rough textures and the brilliant interplay of light and shadow. Bill still paints on location but produces most of his work from sketches in his home studio in Christchurch.

Tutoring art part-time, he is always in demand as a critic and teacher for art groups around the country. Today Bill's work is highly valued and he is recognized as one of New Zealand's leading artists. His paintings are sought after and widely represented in private collections both in New Zealand and internationally.

“ I have loved to draw and paint since childhood. It is how I best express my thoughts and feelings. I love to share my world with others and many appreciate my view of it. Everything I see is defined by light and shade. Morning and afternoon are vastly different and this difference alters from day to day. My privilege is to understand and record it. Every picture I paint is a new challenge and an opportunity to express the landscape and my interpretation of it. It is a joy to go to work on another painting! ”
